I was happy to see my students smiling faces today. I hope that everyone had a safe and restful winter break, and students are ready for the last three months of the school year! Yes, I can't believe how fast time flies!
6th graders are continuing their reading of The Watson's Go to Birmingham, and 7th graders are reading the Outsiders. With themes of family dysfunction, friendship, and sibling rivalry, and fitting in, we certainly have a lot to talk about. Students are working steadily on READ 180 software, building up vocabulary skills, spelling, and reading comprehension. Happy Monday! Today in 7th grade, we went to the computer lab to take the rSkills test from Workshop 8. The rSkills test is an assessment that test student knowledge of the skills from the unit (workshop). Progress reports come home today! Parents please review your child's academic progress, and sign the (Q3) envelope. Students should return signed envelops on Monday.
This week, students in my READ 180 class are wrapping up their workshops. 6th graders have been learning about Child Labor and how this is a global problem around the world. They have read about child labor factories in Indonesia, where children as young as 5 years old are forced to work long hours sewing soccer balls together or adding shoelaces to shoes. We even learned about teen migrants workers in the United States working long hard hour on farms in Texas. Many of these stories have been heart wrenching and eye-opening. Fortunately, we also learned that around the world, many global agencies are working diligently towards ending child labor.
Parents, please continue to talk to your children about what they are reading and writing about at school. This not only helps you to stay involved, but also helps to create meaningful conversations between you and your child. |
