Students are off to a good start with our read 180 rotations. Students are using the read 180 student app to build up their reading skills. Students must successfully get through the reading zone, word zone, spelling zone, fluency and writing zones, to make it to the final zone: success zone!
Students have been building reading endurance during the independent reading rotation by choosing books in their “lexile bubble” and reading for 15-20 minutes. After reading, they must fill out their reading logs and write a short summary about the days reading, before rotating to the small group table for our lesson. In the video above, students took a moment to practice their student affirmations. They are working on memorizing those affirmations to lay a positive foundation for learning this year! They had fun practicing!

On Monday, students will begin their new READ 180 rotational groups. Students are placed in groups according to their new (RI) Reading Inventory results. Everyday in reading support, students rotate between 3 groups:
I'm looking forward to starting our first READ 180 Workshop! Today students from my reading class are taking the first RI-Reading Inventory assessment of the year. So far, I'm seeing significant growth from last year to now with my 7th graders! I'm excited about seeing 6th grade scores this afternoon! On Friday, and Monday I will be conferencing with each student. We will talk about scores and discuss their goals for the year. Please see the attached document below for more information about the R! assessment. One part of academic success and personal success, is having good organization skills. In reading class, students are required to have a reading binder. Today we started filling our binders with a few important papers. Each student should have the following items in their binder:
Parents, please make sure that your child has a binder, specifically designated for reading class. Thanks! This week in Reading Support, students will be learning about Mindset: Fixed Mindset vs. Growth Mindset. Students will learn what type of mindset they have, and begin to explore how they can change their mindset. We will do some reading, writing, goal setting, and have discussions around this exciting topic. Take a look at the video below that students will be viewing on Mindset Matters: Hello parents and students! I am so excited to be back and teaching READ 180 for the 2019-2020 school year at Smitha Middle School! We have so much to accomplish this year, and I am confident that students will be leveling up to reach their goals! Last week was full of getting to know you, community building activities in our classroom. Students were reminded that in order to be successful, they have to come prepared. In my reading class students must have a reading binder. This binder stays in the classroom all year, and holds student work, along with other artifacts and documents. Please make sure that your student has the following items for my reading class:
