Students have their first Reading Counts quiz due on or before Thursday, September 19th. In Reading Support, students are required to read at least one (1) book per month and take the test for that book on the computer.
Reading Counts assessments leverage the Read 180 independent reading program into a measurable and highly motivating literacy resource. This Lexile-based independent reading program tracks students’ success on the books they read, in and out of school. Software-based reading recommendations, assessment, instant feedback, and monitoring are just some of the tools that help turn all students into successful independent readers. Parents, please remember that students have homework in Reading Support every night. Their homework is to read 30 minutes or more each night. Please require your child to always have a book that they are currently reading. Ask your child about what they are reading and what interests them. Thanks for your support!

This week, Monday thru Thursday, 7th grade students will be taking the Iowa Assessment. This test helps determine how students are performing compared to their peers across the nation.
These tests measure achievement in several important content areas: Reading, English Languages Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies. These tests also help us to identify a student's strengths and weaknesses in order to provide additional support. Please be aware that we are on a testing schedule this week, which means I will NOT see every class for Reading Support this week. Thanks! This week in REAd 180/Reading Support, 7th grade students are learning about story elements through the study of dystopian fiction. Dystopian fiction is a compelling genre known for it's gloom and doom appeal, in which the characters have no choice in the world, and their lives have already been determined for them. Students discusses how important personal choice is for them, and how sad it would be to live in a Dystopian world. For example, we discussed the themes from the movie in the Hunger Games. A few students even decided to check out the Dystopian themed book, The Hunger Games from our LLC. Students compared this idea to that of Utopia, in which the world is happy and perfect all the time. Through these genres, students are learning to identify, setting, characters, plot and theme. |
