Hello Parents! Next week while we are relaxing during Spring Break, please make sure that your children are still spending time reading everyday. Remember, we will be taking the Georgia Milestones only a couple weeks after we return from our break and we want our students to be successful. Remember, the only way we become better readers is to read! Below are a few strategies for becoming a better reader:

Thanks! On Monday, I attended the 28th Annual KSU Conference on Literature for Children and Young Adults. This was a great opportunity to explore new literature that is on the market for middle grades and young adults. We had the opportunity to listen to popular authors speak such as Matt de la Pena.
Matt writes book from an authentic point of view. As the child of a Mexican American father, and a White mother, he weaves into his stories his unique and often challenging childhood. Some of MAtt's titles include, Mexican White Boy, Last Stop on Market Street, and Ball Don't Lie. During our Break Out sessions we were able to learn about different and fun ways local teachers and librarians are using literature to enhance the learning of students, I picked up some great ideas that I plan on using in my READ 180 class. Students recently practiced summarizing by writing book reviews using an online website called Voki. Voki is a digital avatar creator that allows users to create animates characters that move and speak. Students chose a short book that they read, then they wrote a short summary using a template provided by Ms. LaVigne. After editing and correcting the rough draft, students were ready to create their digital avatars. This was a great way to integrate technology use into our reading class while practicing reading and writing skills. The students enjoyed it! |
