7th and 8th graders just finished reading our first novel, Monster by Walter Dean Myers. Students enjoyed reading this realistic fiction novel that told the story of 16 year old Steve Harmon, a young African American male who has been accused of committing a felony crime. Students explored complex themes such as racism, discrimination, the criminal justice system, and family relationships. During this unit we explored the purpose of a jury, and learned what their function is in a courtroom. Students expanded their vocabulary by learning new words such as prosecutor, alleged, and verdict. Students also had the opportunity to work on writing standards by responding to the literature and writing prompts. This week each student will be writing a book review on this title. Stay tuned! |
