One way students stay accountable for their own reading, is by keeping a reading log. Student reading logs are kept inside of the reading binder/folder that is kept in my classroom.
The reading log is collected every 2 weeks and is graded for completion and accuracy. Students must write a summary of the days reading every time they read a book in my class. Parents, please make sure students are also reading at home for 20-30 minutes every night. Ask your child to show them the books they are reading and talk to them daily about school and what they are learning.

Today in reading, our focus was on content area vocabulary. Student's completed a concept map on the word justice. We did an in-depth study of this word and talked about about real life examples. Students also brainstormed synonyms for the word justice and we wrote them on sticky notes. We came up with words like fairness, lawfulness, honesty, truth and integrity. Through association, students talked about the Justice League super-heros and discussed how each super-hero represents justice. On Thursday, my classes will be working in the Library Learning Commons. Students are required to have a library book with them in class at all times. Students will have the opportunity to check out books and return books while in the library. Our Media Specialist will also talk to students about Cobb Digital Library, new High-Low books, and accessing our digital books using a QR code. Today in Reading, students took a Non-Fiction Basic Skills Reading Test. Students read a passage and answered 10 comprehension questions. 7th grades had an additional short response question to answer. I reminded students that all of the work we do in Reading class supports the standards and effort of ELA, so writing in a part of that.
We are also working on increasing reading endurance so we practiced silent sustained reading for 10 minutes, after our test. I'm looking forward to seeing student growth. Parents, tonight is Open House at Smitha Middle School! You will get to meet and greet all of your child's teachers and learn a little bit about each class. Open house starts at 7:00 pm. Hope to see you there!
Today in Reading Support we started a lesson on Mindset. Students learned that your mindset is your way of thinking. We talked about ways in which we could change our mindset to position ourselves for success in Reading. Students watched a short video designed for young people on mindset. I reminded students of a quote: "As a man thinks in in heart, so is he." We also talked about the statements, "If you think you can, you are right, and if you think you can't you are also right." We discussed why this is true in all of our lives. Students wrote down the challenges they have in reading, and we brainstorms ways in which we would meet those challenges in Reading Support this year. Today was an insightful and thoughtful day in room 630. On Monday, students will continue to learn about the classroom procedures in the READ 180 classroom. Students will begin learning about each rotational center, and what is expected at each center. Parents, please make sure that you are aware of the rules and expectations that your child should follow while using technology and the Internet at school. Please talk to your child about responsible and safe use of the Internet. Thanks! Welcome back students and parents! I'm enjoying getting to know all of my new 6th grade students, and reconnecting with 7th graders!
Today in class, students reviewed the different pages of the Cobb Student Handbook, located in the student agenda. We talked about the Student Conduct Code, attendance requirements, grades and many other topics. Parents, please make sure that you are checking your students agenda daily. Many teachers send messages and notes home that are written in the agenda, as well as class assignments and homework. I'm looking forward to a successful year! |
